A Letter from RISE Member Mary Harman
This fall, I’ll be working with a small group of local artists on a brand new community art project with RISE, Roslindale IS for Everyone to make art with adult English language learners at ABCD (Action for Boston Community Development). The goal is to help the students, who are immigrants, express their personal stories — their hopes and dreams and fears — by combining the English they’ve learned with visual images.
Many languages are represented in each class and we hope that this project will encourage students to share their stories with one another as well as with the broader community. We will work with 45 students in three 1.5-hour sessions to create 18- inch square artworks that will be “woven” into a quilt.
We need to raise $1,000 to cover the cost of materials: maps, paint and brushes, glue, assorted papers and work tools, and color photocopying of the students’ own memorabilia.
Your contribution of $25, $50 or $100 will help these new Bostonians express the amazing stories inside them, as they work hard to improve their English language skills. Can you help?
We launch on October 4, so please send a check today, payable to: Southwest Boston CDC with “Roslindale Community Fund-LAI” in the memo line.
Checks should be mailed to: SWBCDC, Roslindale Community Fund, 11 Fairmount Ave # 101, Hyde Park, MA 02136.
If you have any questions, suggestions, or want to let me know you’ve been able to contribute, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you for your generosity!
